Postal 4's basic setup sees the Postal Dude return along with his loyal canine companion, Champ. Postal 4 can't even claim to be problematic, as its bloodshed is notably tame by today's standards, and any jokes that might be considered offensive are too focused on lazy stereotypes to be considered noteworthy. ![]() This is a series that gained traction by courting controversy at a time when pearl-clutching over video game violence was world news. ![]() It's mind-numbingly dull, its combat is unenjoyable and lifeless, its humor is unfunny, and it's plagued by myriad technical issues, glitches, and crashes. Edensin is bright and sunny, add some life. The Steam page for open-world first-person shooter Postal 4: No Regerts markets it as, "The long-awaited true sequel to what's been fondly dubbed as 'The Worst Game Ever,' Postal 2!" If developer Running With Scissors' goal was to live up to this legacy and maybe even outdo itself, then it succeeded with aplomb. Not to mention, as you're traveling from point A to point B in Edensin, the NPCs are literally just walking like they have no pathing and as if sidewalks don't exist. This really stood out to me at the polling office on Thursday where the two politicians are just saying random one liners in an empty room. Whereas, Postal 4 is a modern game and RWS is already putting a lot of effort in it. So was Paradise, but Postal 2 is pretty fucking old and that's okay. The other thing I take issue with is that Edensin is kinda lifeless and it's inhabitants are just walking around aimlessly with no purpose and waiting to die. Postal 4 doesn't really have that type of stuff. There's certain quips like "I suppose it would be more politically correct to kill the women and minorities first" that stands out to me as extremely hilarious and fatally edgy. Just because I said Postal 4 is more inappropriate than Postal 2 doesn't mean it's more edgy too. But still, Postal 4's satire is pretty funny, it's just that some people may not get it unless they're culturally read up on the 2010s. It may take some time to tell, but the social commentary and satire may not stand the test of time and age like milk. Certain things that Postal 2 pokes fun at are still relevant to this day, like for example, people believing violent video games cause actual violence. Where Postal 4 falls currently is that the humor and social commentary doesn't hit me in all the right spots like in Postal 2. The game is shaping to be better than Postal 2. Also, in the current version of the game, there's more interaction in the world, mostly in the form of playing the games and riding the rides at Kunny Island. I like the safeguards that prevent you from using health pipes and other drugs accidentally, which was a problem that plagued me in Postal 2. The scooter and train station does wonders for traversing the world. Better visuals, bigger world, more inappropriate. Overall, Postal 4 in it's current state is pretty good. I'm not gonna judge Postal 4 as a finished product, but I suppose I can make a comparison between both 2 and 4. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The highly concentrated antioxidant properties present in the G-force will mainly support detoxification, providing excellent dental health support. I think many of my colleagues today in the history and sociology of science would find that ambition wrong-headed. Kuhn had an ambition with the book, which was common at the time: He really thought there was a structure, a hidden key that makes science tick. Ultimately, is opening up this whole discussion about how scientific knowledge arises, even if his ideas are subject to much revision, Kuhn’s central legacy?Ī. ![]() I think that’s what Kuhn intended to do, and did do, when he sent this book out into the world. The world is remarkably complicated, so let’s capture something worthy of focus, and then let’s refine, and ask new questions, add in new features, add in maybe finer distinctions. He would give some ground, defend at other times, and revisit his arguments. So right from the fall of 1962, readers were writing to him with great excitement, and with really good questions. I’ve gone through a large chunk of Kuhn’s correspondence, which is here at the Institute Archives, and you can see him trying to work this out in individual conversations in the mail, which crystallize into some of his better-known later essays. Does it mean this, but not that? What counts as a paradigm?” May all our first passes be so rich in ideas and challenging notions! And it was perfectly normal for close readers to come back and say, “You use this word paradigm a lot. The whole book was originally commissioned to be an encyclopedia article, and the project grew and deepened. Even in the preface to the 1962 book, he said this was a first pass at a longer book. Many readers over the years have suggested that certain parts of Kuhn’s book required additional analysis, to clarify just what he meant by “paradigm,” for instance, and Kuhn worked fervently for decades to write follow-up essays and clarify. For all the authority people have invested in this book, to what extent should we regard it as a kind of work in progress?Ī. You wrote an essay in Nature earlier this year in which you said that “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” reminds you of the kind of “toy model” that physicists use - and Kuhn was a trained physicist - to simplify the world in a productive way. That wasn’t totally unique to Kuhn, but it was a pretty new way to think about the scientific endeavor and the notion of change over time. These radical ruptures, though rare, Kuhn thought, could really reshuffle the basic facts of science - because those facts, he argued, are not separable from the reigning ideas or theoretical explanations of the time. Sometimes we do change our conceptual filters. There could be a kind of progress of knowledge that was not a linear progress, nor progress toward a particular end.Ī related notion that Kuhn helped further was this idea that even very careful scientists take in the world through a lens of prior concepts, or engage in “theory-laden observation.” Science is driven by ideas to start with, and our engagement with the world is based on this active lens of ideas. But nonetheless, scientific knowledge could be a great deal more complicated and rich than the notion that we just get closer and closer to some sort of ultimate truth. One of them was that science might not be progressing toward a single truth - although Kuhn was at pains the rest of his life to say that didn’t mean he thought it was all made up, either. It’s not that every word in the book was without precedent, but it presented many ideas with a great cleverness and clarity. In retrospect, what was so innovative about them?Ī. Over 50 years, we’ve become highly acclimated to Kuhn’s ideas. MIT News spoke with David Kaiser, the Germeshausen Professor of the History of Science, about Kuhn’s work. 7, the Institute hosted a symposium on Kuhn’s thought and influence, on the 50th anniversary of his celebrated book. Kuhn spent the last 17 years of his career at MIT, until his death in 1996. To Kuhn, this also suggested that scientific knowledge does not consist of a straightforward accumulation of objective facts - a controversial view often seized upon by skeptics of science, to Kuhn’s chagrin. Kuhn asserted that most research takes place during periods of “normal science,” which are occasionally upended when scientists find a new and more compelling framework, or paradigm, for interpreting known observations - such as Newton’s overturning of Aristotelian ideas about motion. If you’ve ever talked about a “paradigm shift,” you’ve channeled Thomas Kuhn, the historian and philosopher of science whose landmark 1962 bestseller, “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” changed how people discuss the scientific enterprise. ![]() ![]() ![]() We won’t post comments that include personal information, like Social Security numbers, account numbers, home addresses, and email addresses. We won’t post threats, defamatory statements, or suggestions or encouragement of illegal activity. We won’t post comments that include vulgar messages, personal attacks by name, or offensive terms that target specific people or groups. We won’t post off-topic comments, repeated identical comments, or comments that include sales pitches or promotions. We expect commenters to treat each other and the blog writers with respect. Interactive Particle Logo by Tamino Martinius Let’s get off the beaten path and think out-of-the-box: the approach can easily benefit such elements as logotypes and letterings. There are even more impressive ways of using particle animation. An amazing vista of waves feels futuristic, artificial and mesmerizing. Kevin Rajarm took the beauty and elegance of particle animation and enhanced it with the awesomeness of Three.js, bringing about a delicate yet truly sophisticated concept. His routine of disintegrating and re-forming the sphere is fantastic. The orb looks fragile thanks to tiny particles, and at the same time, firm thanks to well-thought-out behavior. And Nate Willey’s take on this trend is quite impressive. Spheres are quite popular stylistic choices for hero areas these days. Although they do not perform a role of center of orbit yet they form focal points that force particles to move in their direction. They intrude into the chaotic movement of the dots and pull them like a magnet. Stardust is a symbiosis of design and coding that results in an inspiring masterpiece.Īkimitsu Hamamuro invites you to add so-called “gravity points” in his playground. The project enthralls not only with the idea but also with the realization. Having received an award for the most hearted project of 2017, Plankton is certainly worthy of attention. PLANKTON – Particles life by Marco Dell’Anna Note the physics: the interplay between the dots is well-thought-out. The behavior of the animation is reminiscent of fish movement when it is close to the water surface. The mouse cursor also pushes away the dots, forming a trace with a subtle ripple effect. This version of particle animation is quite popular among developers, though not in such a monumental scale.Īlex Safayan came up with almost the same solution, but in this case, particles are increasingly enlarged. And Justin Windle has certainly met our expectations. With 30,000 particles on board, you expect something grandiose. Let’s consider some phenomenal code snippets created by the real fans of this solution. And, developers stick to this postulate through thick and thin, making the most out of it. The premise is: particle animation should impress. Moreover, it perfectly contributes to high-tech, geometric and businesslike aesthetics – naturally finishing them off. ![]() ![]() It is not something extraordinary, yet it has a certain wow factor. However, it does not mean that the approach is limited to just this sort of realization. It is a combination of particles and parallax that results in an engaging and dynamic aesthetic. The massive current obsession with designs that have a high-tech vibe and geometric decor makes them one of the more sought-after solutions today.Īs a rule, particle animation can be seen in hero sections like, for example, in JetUp Digital.Īs you can see, it is an elegant way to add a certain spice to the first impression, while delicately and unobtrusively separating the website from the crowd. This is good for staying alive in winter, not so good for being comfortable on sunny rock climbs. It also means I typically don’t wear much when moving uphill, usually a thin layer is adequate while skinning. So it was with some skepticism that I decided to try out the Outdoor Research Uberlayer Hooded Jacket, a breathable insulation piece designed to be put on and stay on for a full day of aerobic activity in winter conditions. I had tried out the OR Superlayer last year and two things I didn’t like about that jacket were improved in the Uberlayer: 1) it has a hood (duh!), and 2) it’s lighter weight, which means it offers a better balance between breathability and warmth. The Polartec Alpha Active insulation does a good job dumping heat, and I was indeed impressed with how well the technology worked. On cold days, I could leave it on while skinning at a moderate pace, and then there was no need to put on a jacket for the descent. It’s amazing what a small thing that is, but how much of an impact it had. Out on ski missions, when I got to the top, it was one less thing I needed to do before heading down.
